Don’t Wait Until Winter to Check Your Central Heating

January 31st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Heating Systems
Ivor Bates asked:

With the onset of autumn, it won’t be long before householders start to switch on their heating systems. But if you leave it until the colder weather draws in to test run your system then find it is not in full working order, you could be in for the long haul whilst waiting for an engineer to call to fix the problem.

For this reason it is vital that everyone test runs their central heating systems during the early autumn whilst they still have a chance of getting an engineer out in a minimum time frame should they encounter problems.

Any plumbing or heating engineer will tell you the number of calls they get come October or November is exceptionally high. As soon as those first frosts of winter bite, plumbers are inundated with requests for central heating repairs and new installations.

Naturally, all the calls are urgent as people are suffering without their heating as the winter chills take hold. This can be particularly concerning for the more elderly homeowners who, without the warmth of their surroundings, can be at serious risk.

Taking the time to test your system earlier in the autumn means you will have a better chance of getting an engineer out sooner whilst it is still relatively warm and the matter is not so urgent. Make sure that you also test the systems of elderly relatives or neighbours to make sure they are ready for the winter too.

In summary, the advice to remember is, check central heating systems in September or early October. Make sure they are in full working order. If you detect even the slightest problem, then call a trusted, CORGI registered engineer out immediately so that it can be fixed before the cold weather sets in.

Both units are outdoors and are combined in one unit. My house size is 1100 sq ft. The heating part of the unit is gas and the cooling is electric. How much would it be to replace both? How much to replace just the heating?

When I turn on my air conditioner window unit, it just hums; what is the problem?

Ron asked:

Sunday morning my 3 year old granddaughter was over at my house. I was in the other room and I heard her turning the window unit off and on and off and on and high and low and off and on. I kept yelling for her to stop it and she finally did. That evening I got home and turned on the window air conditioner and it just makes a loud humming noise. It will not work any more. Is there a reset button or something? What is the problem? She just flipped it on and off a lot.
This is a 220 volt unit. Of course it is very heavy. When I turn on the window unit it hums for about 3 seconds then it stops humming. Nothing else happens, including no air is blowing out in those 3 seconds.
I have checked the voltage in the wall outlet and it reads 220 volts. I reached in and spined the blower, and it spins very easily, not stuck at all.
(I spun the blower by hand when it was unpluged) It has not yet spun on its own sense my granddaughter destroyed it.

Getting rid of bugs around air conditioner?

bmm12 asked:

A bird laid a nest under our window air conditioner and before we realized the eggs hatched so we left the nest and are waiting for the birds to leave. We covered the ac inside with plastic just to make sure nothing came in. Recently there has been a large amount of very small bugs inside the plastic and all over the air conditioner. Does anyone know what they are? How to get rid of them? I thought maybe bird mites but I read that they are invisible to the naked eye.

How can I get a sweaty smell out of a car air conditioner?

Ben Lee asked:

I have a 2005 CR-V air conditioner and it seems like every time I turn on the car I get blasted with a nasty B.O. like smell that has been in the air conditioner for over a month. I think it may have something to do with the fact that I have left my gym bag in the car on hot days, but I’m not really sure. What is the best way to get this B.O. smell, or any other smell for that matter, out of a car air conditioner?

Gel stuff in my window air conditioner?

January 29th, 2009 by admin | 1 Comment | Filed in Maintenance Repairs
Boo asked:

What the heck is it? It’s only about 2 months old, if that. I’m calling it a gel but, it has the look of snot. (gross)

It’s in the bottom of the air conditioner. It works just fine, I’ve just never seen gooey stuff like that in one.
It’s a clear gel, not water. It drains fine.
bostep662, how would I wipe it out? The air conditioner is completely encased in a housing. Thanks.

Is changing a heating thermostat as easy as changing a light fixture?

January 29th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Do It Yourself (DIY)
vronni asked:

I have an older round thermostat for my oil-burning heating system, and I just bought a digital model on clearance. I’ve changed light fixtures, installed ceiling fans, and done some other simple electrical work. Will I be able to change this thermostat easily? Anything I should watch out for? Or, any handy tips?
