What should I do about the cover on my air-conditioner?

June 2nd, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Decorating Remodeling
Jane T asked:

I just bought a condo and it hasn’t had any updated design. Its pretty 70’s. It has an air-conditioner on the top of the living room wall. It has a cover that is painted white just like the wall. I would like to do something with it to make it look nice and I want to also paint the walls. The cover sticks out about 5 inches. What should I do with it and what are some trendy colors to paint our walls?

Should I get a portable air conditioner?

Shake That Thing asked:

I’m on the 2nd floor of a private house that allows window air conditioners. However, I’m considering purchasing a portable air conditioner so that I can use it in the kitchen which is parallel to my room. My room is about 200 square feet. Does anyone know how beneficial they are and where I can get one at the best price possible?

How can I put a central heating duct into the bathroom floor without pulling up all the tiles?

May 17th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Decorating Remodeling
Jaspar asked:

Our house has a gas ducted heating system that a previous owner installed. There isn’t a duct in the bathroom, but we noticed one under the house sitting there ready for it. Is there a way I can put that into the tiled floor of the bathroom? The main problem is doing it without having to retile the bathroom - can I cut existing tiles without pulling the whole lot up?.

Alternatively, who do I need to pay to do this for me? A builder? A tiler?

how much space do I need around my air conditioner for it to work properly?

luv_the_red_head asked:

I am building a room on to my home, and we are kind of having to build it around the air conditioner unit outside. It is on a cement slab and is about 5 feet from the house. Would it be ok to build a room around this unit? It will be completely open on top, but surrounded on three sides with building that is 8 - 10 feet tall. How far away from the unit should the room be? How much room does an air conditioner unit need to function properly?

What would happen if you install a room air conditioner not in a window?

davidsethzemon asked:

Living in an 11×12 college campus dorm, and I just bought a 5,200 BTU Air Condition by Haier for the room. Its a room air conditioner; supposedly able to cool the room and install in a breeze (no pun intended) with its quick snap install kit. Problem is it won’t fit in the window and the quick snap kit is essentially a quick-snap-piece-of-junk. What would happen if we let the unit rest on the window sill- not actually connected to the outside but still cooling the room. What problems/solutions would this bring on? Thanks in advance…
Liking the answers so far, but I want to explain…there is no hose leading out of the machine. Its basically a box with vent convers on the back and front. Even if its sitting in the window, only the back half of the machine is outside. How does the water drip regardless inside or out with no hose?

What’s the best heating system to install in this house?

whitewolfe asked:

We are considering purchasing a home that has no conventional heating system and no basement. It was originally a hunter’s cabin that was added onto over the years. It’s a very interesting home with lots of great features and a LOT of land, but it basically has no heating system and no basement in which to install a furnace. This home is in Massachusetts.

The previous owners used only a wood burning stove and space heaters. I don’t want to rely on the stove, I would prefer conventional heating. What kinds of heating systems could be installed without spending megabucks?

I think electric baseboard would be the easiest, but I hear it’s not a great choice for cold climates. I’ve also heard about radiant floor heat, and found a company online that says it will only cost $1.50 square foot to install (the home is no more than 1500) and that seems pretty cheap, and from what I can understand, it’s more efficient? But doesn’t the floor have to be ripped up?

What would be best?
Well, it has absolutely nothing underneath the house, but it does have a decent, clean crawl space in between the 1st and 2nd floors, if that is what you mean. :) A system can be installed in there? There is no attic. Interesting thoughts about the radiant heat, I didn’t realize that they were water pipes.

Is there a way to block a permanently installed air conditioner without blocking the air flow?

December 29th, 2008 by admin | 2 Comments | Filed in Decorating Remodeling
Reed B asked:

I’m trying to rearrange my living room in my apartment, and I’d like to put my sofa against a wall that has a permanently installed air conditioner built into it. Is there a way I can do this without affecting the air flow of the air conditioner? Maybe something along the lines of an attachable scoop or something, to redirect the air? Or I don’t know, SOMETHING that’ll allow me to use that wall for furniture!
