Has anyone made their own soil heating cables?

July 31st, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Do It Yourself (DIY)
ginkgoblu asked:

I am interested in making my own soil heating cables and I was wondering if anyone know how to go about this?
I have a basic concept of what they do but I am little fuzzy on some things like what resistors to use and what gauge of wire to use, basically some math and some practical experience.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So lets say you want to air condition a room. But, the room has no window to put an air conditioner in. Is this at all possible? Like, is there any type of air conditioner you can set up in a room, without using a window? Thanks.

I wondered about conectiong the radiator next to the fire. And having a zig zag of pipes across the back of the stove to pick up heat and then send it round the system? IS that possible?

How do I a seal large opening where patio door used to be but will now be where air conditioner will be?

Ulrika E asked:

We are trying to beat the heat so we bought an air conditioner.
Would you use cardboard and tape? Plastic bags and tape? Some kind of foam and if so what kind? Wood? How much would you estimate your solution costs? I don’t want to spend more than 100$. Is your solution easy to take away and put back up? Thanks!

How can I install a window air conditioner with windows that open like doors instead of up and down?

July 11th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Do It Yourself (DIY)
Rob W asked:

I hope this makes sense. My windows open outwards like cafeteria doors. To open/close them I use a little crank in the corner. It’s an older home. Is there anyway to install a window air conditioner in a window like this without replacing the whole window? Thanks!

How to trim 2 off an old aluminum heating duct?

July 6th, 2009 by admin | No Comments | Filed in Do It Yourself (DIY)
Cluny Brown asked:

I have an old house where the owner left the heating duct sticking out of the wall by two inches. It looks like aluminum. I don’t want to use tin snips or any hand tools to cut it. I have a reciprocating saw–what gauge blade [TPI] is right to cut this…and do I need to oil the metal surface before I cut it? Thanks.
